Research and Planning
Project Description
The Yellow Pencil and City of Edmonton teams worked closely to develop a plan that supported the goals of the new notification service website.
City Operations works with Communications and Engagement to notify Citizens about roadway maintenance, including parking bans and spring sweeps and would like to expand their service to include Short Message Service(SMS)/Text. Their current service includes notifications on social media and via email for those who have opted into the services.
Key Insight
A shift in public notifications from traditional local print media to a more diverse array of platforms encompassing digital channels reflects a commitment to enhancing accessibility and engagement with the community. Within this context, various business areas are engaged in addressing the challenge of public notifications through a range of approaches:
-
Facility Notifications
-
Waste Management
-
Zoning Bylaw Updates
-
Parks and Road Notices
-
Land Development Application Alerts
-
Development Permit Announcements
-
Notification Banners

Each of these areas is actively exploring solutions to improve the effectiveness and reach of public notifications, ensuring vital information is communicated efficiently and comprehensively to the community. We initiated the first phase of the project by designing and developing service notifications for parking bans and street sweeping for the City of Edmonton.
Our Solution & New Design
City of Edmonton Notification Service
I conducted discovery sessions with stakeholders to pinpoint the precise requirements for the new service, leading to the adoption of a mobile-first design strategy. Collaborating closely with a designer, we crafted a cohesive wireframe tailored to meet the City of Edmonton's specifications, ensuring a user-friendly experience for residents.
Wireframe
The wireframes presented the framework and arrangement for the MVP phase of the Public Notification Service's mobile-first design approach. Presented in greyscale, they prioritize structural accuracy, emphasizing the foundational elements of the design.

Usability Research
Through usability research, we studied people as they attempted to use a website and digital service.
By observing the digital service in action and receiving information from users via email or contact forms, we could discern how they interacted with the existing service. This immediate feedback provided us with the insights necessary to identify problems and explore opportunities to fulfill user needs.
